The UW MBA Consortium hosted its inaugural international experience during Winterim 2025 (January), offering students a transformative journey through Spain and Portugal. Over ten days, students engaged in business meetings with industry leaders, immersed themselves in authentic cultural experiences, and strengthened their professional networks. This experience provided valuable insights into global business environments and cultural dynamics while fostering leadership development, along with professional and personal growth.

The international experience broadened students’ global awareness and provided a meaningful way to apply their MBA learning in real-world settings. Sharon Zell, a Controller and Chief Accounting Officer from Minnesota, reflected on how the program deepened her understanding of international business and cultural perspectives. “The international experience provided a unique opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture, understand diverse perspectives, and learn about international business practices firsthand. I highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity!”

Throughout the program, students had the chance to meet with senior leadership from diverse industries, gaining firsthand knowledge of business practices, challenges, and opportunities in Spain and Portugal. These visits offered an inside look at how companies navigate local and global markets while adapting to cultural and economic shifts. Bill Blount, a Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer from Illinois, reflected on how these experiences shaped his understanding of international business. “From exploring the ancient streets of Lisbon and Madrid to meeting with innovative startups, each day provided invaluable insights into how culture, history, and regional identity shape business operations. What struck me most was learning how companies like Sant’Anna Tile Factory still use centuries-old artisanal techniques while adapting to modern markets and how Atlético de Madrid incorporated historical traditions while developing new revenue streams. The business visits and cultural activities created an experience that no classroom could replicate. This international experience has taught me the challenges expatriate managers face, and the strategic thinking required to succeed in diverse international markets.”

From family-owned businesses to cutting-edge companies driving innovation, students witnessed how organizations in Spain and Portugal balance tradition with forward-thinking strategies in a rapidly evolving global economy. “Experiencing business in Spain and Portugal was eye-opening—seeing how culture influences strategy, learning from local companies and historical tours, and connecting with fellow MBA students made this trip both insightful and unforgettable,” said Courtney Verska, a Senior Manager from North Carolina. “It’s one thing to study global business in a classroom, but it’s another to see it in action (with tapas in hand!). I highly recommend this experience to any student looking to expand their perspective—and their palate!”

Beyond business meetings, students immersed themselves in the vibrant cultures of Lisbon and Madrid. They explored historical landmarks, such as Pena Palace and Plaza Mayor, attended traditional Fado and Flamenco performances, and experienced the deep-rooted traditions that influence local business and society. “The UW MBA Consortium’s first-ever international experience gave us an opportunity to tour and learn about the colorful histories of Lisbon and Madrid,” said Khadin Nathoo, a Continuous Improvement Manager from Ontario. “This experience opened my eyes to many different mindsets and ways of working and living, incorporating holistic views on innovation, tradition, and sustainability.”

For many students, this trip was also an opportunity to build lasting connections with peers and program leads. “The MBA international experience in Lisbon and Madrid was more than just my first trip across an ocean; it was an unbelievable opportunity to learn from business leaders and create new relationships,” shared Peter Boguszewski, an IT Director from Wisconsin. “From the beautiful cobblestone streets of Lisbon to the rich history of Madrid, every day was a lesson in business, history, and connection. This was the perfect balance of education, exploration, and fun!”

Students also found the experience to be an immensely valuable part of their MBA journey. “I wish I had longer in my MBA journey. It would allow me to participate in future international experience opportunities! I visited places I wouldn’t normally have traveled to and had the opportunity to learn from business professionals I otherwise wouldn’t have access to,” said Becky Dowdy, an Account Services Manager from Wisconsin. “We made friends along the way, learned a ton, and made memories we won’t soon forget. It was an amazing trip, and I highly recommend it to anyone who can fit at least one immersion course into their journey.”

Reflecting on the trip, program lead Pang Kou Khang emphasized the impact of this experience on students’ growth and connections. “Seeing our students immerse themselves in the business and cultural landscapes of Spain and Portugal was truly inspiring. This experience went beyond the classroom, providing them with real-world insights, professional connections, and a broader global perspective. It was especially rewarding to witness the strong connections they built with one another throughout the journey—learning not only from industry leaders but also from each other.”

The UW MBA Consortium extends a sincere thank you to Austral Education Group for their partnership in making this program a success. Their support and expertise played a crucial role in creating an unforgettable learning experience for the MBA students. As the program looks ahead, plans are already underway to build on this foundation and continue offering international experience opportunities that inspire leaders at every stage of their professional journey while cultivating global mindsets.
